MLS Week #35 October 28

The regular season is over. 391 games completed. 17 more games to go. More fun data to follow, but for now we will finish off the regular season reports with PRO’s opinion on the DC United free kick offside decision and the final Call of the Week.

INTERFERING WITH OPPONENT OR GAINING AN ADVANTAGE

Was this a case of interfering with an opponent by blocking their line of vision that should have been flagged the moment the shot was taken or was it just gaining an advantage when the player played to ball from the keeper’s save?

This is interfering with an opponent by being in the line of vision of the keeper (of course, there is also a second gaining an advantage offence). Although this decision, to be made correctly, needs teamwork with the referee. The AR cannot simply put the flag up on the shot, since from their angle they cannot tell what the line of vision is for the keeper, or the direction of the shot.

The following procedure should be followed:

  • AR should inform the referee of the attacker’s offside position while the free kick is being set up.

  • The referee - who can tell already that that position is likely in the line of vision - should warn the player that he runs the risk of being offside on the shot.

  • AR must let referee know if the attacker is still in an offside position at the shot

  • Referee decides if there is an offside offence and blows the whistle

  • On the whistle the AR should raise the flag.
