MLS Week #6 April 6-8

This week we are going to talk about how to improve on a confusing situation, a quick shout out to some good movement, another What Would You do? and of course, Call of the Week.

GOOD MOVEMENT

Not much to say about this clip, other than we rarely get good shot of an assistant referee's movement.  Good speed, good body posture, good decision.  Notice how he is constantly adjusting to stay dead even with the second to last defender. At the moment of the pass he is in perfect position to see no offside infraction.

A LITTLE BIT OF CONFUSION

Sometimes the referee and the AR are not in sync when it comes to communication and the process to get to the correct decision looks murky.  In Columbus, the assistant referee keeps his flag down on a close decision (the video is paused incorrectly by the broadcast - but what else is new) a shot is taken that goes wide as another attacker in offside position makes a clear attempt to play the ball that impacts an opponent.  The AR is expecting a goal kick decision and decides that there is no need to raise the flag as the restart is nearly identical. However, the referee has spotted a slight touch by the defender and decides to give a corner kick.  When the AR realizes that there will be an corner kick, he informs the referee of the offside infraction and the decision is changed.
We recommend to go with the flag in this incident, especially if you have no doubt about the offside infraction.  The referee has the option to wave down the flag and give whichever restart he chooses (hopefully he chooses the offside and not the corner kick).  In this way, players will not be confused as to the decision.  This play happens so quickly that it would be doubtful that the referee and AR would have been able to communicate effectively before a flag was raised.

ANSWER - WHAT SHOULD YOU DO - COLUMBUS V VANCOUVER

In PRO's opinion this is offside.  When considering interference with an opponent these factors need to be considered:

  • Distance from opponent
  • Clear attempt to play the ball
  • Impact on the opponent

There is no doubt that there is a clear attempt to play the ball (illegally with the hand even).  The goalkeeper has to slow his movement in case the player does touch the ball - impact on the opponent. Additionally, the play happens in proximity to the goalkeeper.

CALL OF THE WEEK #6

This week's Call of the Week features two offside decision where the initial reaction is "where's the flag? - It has to be offside!  But replay proves the AR correct.  The first is from Los Angeles, where Kathryn Nesbitt allows play to continue as the near side defender steps up a moment too late. The attacker should have done better with this chance.
The second features Brian Poeschel, and he is rewarded with a goal at the end of his excellent decision in New England.
