PRO assistant referee during the ARIET test in Colorado

PRO assistant referee during the ARIET test in Colorado

Only three matches this week in MLS due to the international break.  PRO assistant referees used the break to meet in Colorado for fitness testing and classroom work.  Special guest was English Premier and World Cup Final Assistant Referee Darren Cann.  A small portion of his presentation on Match preparation is included here.
Last week we presented a What Should You Do?  from the game Chicago v FC Dallas that the majority of you got wrong. What!? Yes, 77% of you answered incorrectly.  Better read below to see where you went wrong.

Match Preparation - Darren Cann

English Premier and World Cup Final Assistant Referee Darren Cann went thru a typical week to show us how he thoroughly prepares for a match. Propensity and Probability were two words he used often as he studies the data and tendencies of teams and players.

  • Propensity: an inclination or natural tendency to behave in a particular way.
  • Probability will not tell you what "will" happen
  • Probability will tell you what is "likely to happen
  • Any knowledge that gives ARs a chance to judge propensity/probability can only be and advantage

He also touched on how he prepares himself for corner kicks during the match as seen in these three slides from his presentation

What Should You Do? CHI v FCD - Answer

This play is offside according to FIFA.  One of the considerations for deliberate play is whether a defender has control of his body to make a play on the ball.  Although the defender has more time to react to the ball because of the long pass, he was moving in an opposite direction and can only throw his foot out at the ball.  This is a deliberate action, but not a deliberate play as he is unbalanced and falling.  This would be very hard for the assistant referee to spot on this play, however referees should also be aware of this type of action.

What should you do? - CHI v FCD?
No flag - defender made a deliberate play
Flag - defender deflects the ball

Call of the Week 14 Winner - Jason White

Call of the Week #15

Three games - Three choices.  Although two come from the same match.  First there is Kevin Klinger in Portland who correctly judges Portland's Adi to be even with the second to last defender on the opening goal.  In Chicago, we have to go to the panoramic camera to prove both Anthony Vasoli and Jeff Greeson correct on what on the regular broadcast feed appears to be offside.  Which was better?

Jeremy Hanson

Anthony Vasoli

Jeff Greeson
